English Muffle (known as Muffled glass) was originally produced by Chance Brothers near Birmimgham England until manufacturing ceased in the 1930s. In the 1980s Peter Foster, an insurance executive from Adelaide, Australia, was looking for a hobby in anticipation of retirement. He settled on restoring lead lights and stained glass windows and, along the way, ran into some challenges.
Peter found in his restoration projects, there was a tremendous amount of the original Muffle glass which had been produced by the Chance Brothers. He was able to find some of the much needed glass at the salvage yards, but this supply did not last very long. More muffled glass supplies needed to be sourced.
A New Zealand glass manufacturer agreed to make the glass for him, as Peter was able to get the texture roll made by another New Zealand manufacturer.
In early 1987 the first sheets were made but the stock market crash in October 1987 put the manufacturer out of business.
Peter retrieved his roller from the glass manufacturer and contacted Wissmach Glass. Due to the size of English Muffle rollers these were remade to Wissmach size and the rest is history.
